Large fire breaks out at the Thornes Park Stadium in Wakefield

Fire crews were called to the Horbury Road sports centre at 7.25pm on Wednesday.

The fire spread to an overhanging section of a roof of a building.

It caused heavy smoke logging to the building.

Three crews attended the scene from Wakefield, Ossett and Dewsbury.

The fire service said this is due to the number of calls received.

Crews used 2 hose reels, 2 breathing apparatus and a High Powered fan to clear smoke from the building.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed that the Wakefield crew were still at the scene at 9pm.
