Jealous Leeds thug bottled man after attacking own girlfriend
He has a history of domestic violence
A thug who attacked his girlfriend then hit a man with a bottle when he tried to intervene.
Jealous Brendan King, who has previous convictions for domestic violence, turned violent during a drinking session, Leeds Crown Court heard.
The 49-year-old admitted ABH and common assault and appeared in court over a video link from HMP Leeds where he was being held on remand.
Prosecutor Adam Walker said the defendant and his partner of five years had gone to the address in Headingley on February 21 for drinks.
But during the session, an argument broke out between them.
Eventually, it descended into violence in which King repeatedly punched the woman to the head, and when she fell, he kicked her to the body, legs and head.
When the man tried to step in, King grabbed a bottle of beer and struck him to the back of the head.
He later told the woman that if she came home, he would kill her.
King, of Woodbridge Garth, Headingley, was later arrested and during his police interview, claimed it was self defence, saying the man had approached him armed with a screwdriver.
He has 14 previous convictions for 28 offences dating back to 1996. He had served a prison sentence before for domestic violence.
Mitigating, Stephen Smithson said King had drug issues in the past but was now clean.
He said had “not been spending his time idling” on remand and had a job working in the prison kitchens.
He added: “He is trying to make things as good as he can while in prison. He accepts a custodial length of some length is inevitable.”
Judge Howard Crowson jailed him for 16 months.
