Management at The Old Ball in Horsforth, which is currently closed in line with government guidance, said the 'actions of some have spoilt it for the majority'.

Staff have been forced to repeatedly clean up after groups began using the area outside the pub 'as a place to have large and noisy social gatherings'.

People using the area to have lunch have also been leaving litter 'with total disregard'.

The patio area and huts have now been cordoned off and staff will call the police if people continue to gather.

The team posted on Facebook: "Although we may be closed, we still want to proudly represent ourselves and Horsforth for the great place it is.

"Sadly some selfish people have insisted on using our patio as a place to have large and noisy social gatherings.

"We have been left with smashed glasses and bottles, tons of rubbish across tables and the patio and people playing loud music until the early hours of the morning.

"We have also had plants ripped up from their baskets and guttering pulled down.

"This is expensive to fix for a business in hospitality already struggling with the impact of Covid.

"It is not hard to take your rubbish with you and show some respect."

The team said it was no fair on them, the family living in the pub, their neighbours and the wider community.

They added: "We understand that people like a place to meet friends outdoors at the moment and we have thus far been polite, patient and understanding.

"But this is now being taken advantage of and has to stop.

"From now on, if there are any gatherings, the police will be called instantly to move people on or if necessary issue fines or take action.

"The police will also be carrying out regular patrols to monitor the situation.

"The tables in the huts have been removed and the area cordoned off.

"Thank you to those showing the kindness and community spirit we all need right now and respectfully caring for their local pub and community."
