Holiday in Wales lands convicted Wakefield paedophile back in court

A convicted paedophile was brought back before the courts after he took a holiday in Wales.

Under the terms of the sex offender register, David Brown must keep police informed of his whereabouts every few days.

But the 38-year-old failed to make contact when he went on a break at the end of August, Leeds Crown Court heard.

He was also found to have downloaded WhatsApp and Snapchat, which put him in breach of the sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) he was also under.

Brown, of Sandringham Avenue, Knottingley, was first before the court in April of last year after trying to meet a 13-year-old boy following online grooming.

But the profile of the youngster was run by a paedophile hunter group, who greeted Brown at the proposed meeting place near Co-op in Outwood, Wakefield.

He was jailed for 12 months, given the 10-year SHPO and put on the sex offender register for 10 years.

For his latest offences, he was caught after police installed software on his phone to monitor his use. His phone was seized on September 17, and his probation officer also informed the police of his holiday.

Brown was not represented in court, but Judge Simon Batiste opted to give him an eight-month sentence, suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to complete 15 rehabilitation days and 80 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Batiste told him: “If you do not engage there won’t be any excuse, you have been made aware by me.”
