Hemsworth man who raped teenager in Wakefield district is jailed at Leeds Crown Court

Christopher Adams drank two bottles of vodka and snorted cocaine before twice raping the girl during the attack at an address in Wakefield area, Leeds Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor, Mark McKone said 31-year-old Adams subjected the girl to an ordeal lasting just under two hours on March 4.

Adams held a knife to her head during the first rape.

The court heard police found the knife three days later in the children's playground outside the Redbeck cafe on Doncaster Road in Wakefield.

Mr McKone said Adams told police he committed the offences after drinking two two small bottles of vodka and taking cocaine.

The court heard Adams also forced the girl to take cocaine during her ordeal.

Mr McKone said in a victim statement, the girl described how she has flashbacks and has difficulty sleeping.

Mr McKone added: "She is nervous around men and describes herself as jumpy. Knives make her feel sick and scared."

Adams, of Hemsworth, admitted two charges of rape.

Richard Woolfall, mitigating, said: "The defendant is genuinely sorry. He is deeply remorseful.

"He blames the drink and drugs.The defendant has a history of anxiety and depression.

"Unhappily he found himself medicating with drink and drugs. That's what he was doing, trying to take the pain away."

Mr Woolfall added: "He has little recollection of it or what motivated him to do it."

Jailing Adams for nine years, Judge Mushtaq Khokar, said: "Both before and during this incident yoiu were talking lines of cocaine and you made her take cocaine.

"She must have been absolutely petrified. There was very little she could do because you had that knife against her head during the first rape."

Judge Khokar added: "The complainant has been left with psychological damage.

"This experience, I have no doubt, will remain with her for a long period of time."

Detective Inspector Suzanne Gall, of Wakefield District Child Safeguarding Unit, said after the sentencing hearing: "This was a horrific and sustained attack and I would like to praise the

bravery and courage of the victim in coming forward and reporting these crimes.

"Adams’ substantial custodial sentence reflects the seriousness of his offending.

‘‘Through Adams’ guilty plea he spared his victim a trial. I hope this sentence will give his victim some comfort knowing that he will be behind bars for a long time.

"All sexual offences are treated with the upmost seriousness by Wakefield District Police and victims will always be treated in confidence and supported by specialist officers."
