Four balaclava-clad men wielding hammers smashed the glass counters in a Leeds jewellers before stealing items on display.

West Yorkshire Police were called to Browns Family Jewellers and Pawnbrokers at Crossgates Shopping Centre in Austhorpe Road at 10.40am on Tuesday.

They entered the store before smashing the counters with hammers and stealing display items.

They left the scene in a blue Audi hatchback.

No-one was injured but staff were left shaken as a result.

Two men, one armed with a hammer and the other with an axe, entered the shopping centre and smashed a window at the shop before stealing a number of expensive watches, while staff retreated to a backroom for safety.

Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds District CID, said: “We are carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those responsible and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the men or the blue Audi they used in the area at any time before or after the robbery.”
