Heather Gilmore, prosecuting, said Powell turned violent after spending the day drinking and taking drugs on August 15 this year.

Powell and the victim had been in a relationship for five years and have children together.

Miss Gilmore said the couple married in August 2017 but the relationship began to deteriorate when he was refused a boxing licence and began to drink heavily.

The prosecutor said Powell was also controlling towards the woman and "kept tabs" on where she went and who she spoke to.

The attack in August took place when Powell returned home with his friend.

Powell called his partner a "dumb b****" and slapped her when she asked him to stop being rowdy in the house.

The defendant then threw beer over her.

He followed her upstairs when she left the room and dragged her by the hair into the bathroom.

Powell's friend tried to stop the violence and the woman managed to run from the house in to the street.

Miss Gilmore said Powell told the woman she had left the children in the house and he threatened to kill them.

He pulled his partner back into the house by her hair and she saw a knife at the bottom of the stairs.

The woman managed to hide the weapon and collected her children before putting them in her car.

Powell jumped on the bonnet of the car, banged on the windows and pulled off the windscreen wipers before she managed to drive away.

The ordeal last around one hour.

Police went to the property and arrested him the bedroom.

The woman returned to the property the following day to find clothes, furniture and other property destroyed.

A 42-inch television screen was smashed.

The victim went into the back garden to find a metal bin which had been used to set items alight.

Miss Gilmore said all the victim's clothing, underwear and shoes had been destroyed.

The doors from her wardrobe had been removed and smashed and a pair of hair straighteners burned.

Powell was interviewed about the incident and said he "didn't have a clue" about what he had done because he had drunk a bottle of vodka and taken cocaine.

The defendant has previous convictions for inflicting grievous bodily harm, supplying drugs, drink driving and breaching court orders.

Marcus Waite, mitigating, said Powell pleaded guilty to the offences at an early stage.

He said: "He accepts that he was bingeing on alcohol and drugs on the night in question.

"He genuinely lacks recollection of everything that happened."

Mr Waite said Powell is attending courses to address his issues with alcohol, cocaine and crack cocaine while in custody.

Judge Simon Batiste said:"You burned the vast majority of her clothing and underwear.

"In short it was calculated to do her very significant economic damage.

"The prosecution say this is a high culpability case as this is a revenge attack.

"It was committed while you were on drink and drugs and in a domestic context.

"You were in breach of a community order at the time and it occurred in front of children."
