Father and son football fans beaten by drunken group who told them: 'You're in Leeds now'

Woman left to “carry the can” for group attack that left father and son needing hospital treatment.

A woman who was part of a group that stamped and kicked on a father and son in Leeds has been jailed, having been the only culprit identified.

Angela Edeson was part of a drunken gang that set about the two visitors, telling them: “You’re in Leeds now.”

The 47-year-old appeared at Leeds Crown Court this week, admitting two counts of ABH.

She was being held on remand at HMP New Hall.

The two victims had been watching the international football on the night of October 9 last year in the city centre, and at around 10pm, began to make their way to their Airbnb.

Leaving the pub on Albion Street, they walked along Great George Street over the bridge towards the Clarendon Wing of the Leeds General Infirmary, where they spotted the group of males and females.

They appeared to be drunk and looking for trouble, prosecutor Verity Barnes told the court.

A punch was thrown by a male from the group towards the son and the rest waded in. He was kicked and stamped on and the victim heard someone say: “Check his pockets.”

He managed to get to his feet but his father was not with him. He then found his father further along the pavement, also on the floor.

His mobile phone and wallet had been stolen after being knocked unconscious.

A witness had seen the violence from the window of the Clarendon Wing of the nearby Leeds General Infirmary.

There was also CCTV and DNA from Edeson. She was arrested te next day and gave a mixture of denials and no-comment answers during her police interview.

She has 22 convictions for 40 offences, including three for violence.

Edeson, of Burton Terrace, Beeston, was initially charged with two counts of robbery, but the Crown agreed to accept ABH offences as an alternative.

The robbery charges were left to lie on file.

Mitigating, Adrian Pollard told the court: “She has been the only one arrested for this so she is carrying the can.

“She is upset by how she behaved. She was absolutely horrible to do this.”

He said Edeson had been receiving treatment in hospital for a spider bite from which she almost lost her fingers.

However, he said being on remand had helped, adding: “The last five months have saved her life because her health and lifestyle was such that with the self-destruct nature of her behaviour, she was not going to last very long.”

He said her life had been a “catalogue of misery” but was “ashamed of how she ended up”.

Judge Tahir Khan KC gave her a 21-month jail sentence.
