Everything we know so far as police launch Armley murder investigation

Here is everything we know so far:

Where and when was the incident?

Police were called to the scene at 4.10am on Whingate Avenue on Thursday, August 20.

Who was the victim?

The victim, a man in his forties, was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene.

What happened to the victim?

Initial enquiries suggest the man was attacked by a group of youths who left the scene.

How are police treating the incident?

The man’s death is being treated as murder and an investigation is underway.

What happened at the scene this morning?

Police are expected to remain on the street for the entirety of Thursday.

Officers and police are on either end of Whingate Avenue, with at least six vehicles in the area.

The street is a row of terraced back-to-back houses in Armley.

Residents on the street are being asked to sign in and out as they leave on foot however no vehicles have moved from inside the cordon this morning.

The cordon is situated at either end of Whingate Avenue.

CSI teams arrived on the scene as a section of Armley Town Street was cordoned off.

The square cordon area covers the portion of Town Street at the end of Whingate Avenue.

A total of six officers are standing at each side of the cordon.

CSI vans and police vehicles are also stationed at the scene.

Motorists are being directed around the cordon by officers, with no vehicles going in or out.

Some residents were seen observing the police scene at the cordon in shock.

Police are expected to remain at the scene all day.

Officers are advising passing motorists to take a detour down Whingate Grove.

What did residents say?

Some residents left their homes to assess the scene.

Other residents from the neighbouring street were left shocked at the ‘crazy’ incident, just months after a stabbing in the area.

One man said: “It is crazy, to have happened again in the area.

“I can’t believe it.”

Another man said he didn’t know the victim but that the police scene had been in place since earlier this morning following the 4.10am reports of the incident.

What did police tell us?

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Nicholson said: “We are treating this man’s death as murder and are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances and identify those responsible.

“Our enquiries are at a very early stage and we are very keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the group of youths involved in the area or who has any information that could assist the investigation.

“Officers will be remaining at the scene throughout the day and we are liaising with our colleagues on the local neighbourhood policing team who are working to reassure the community who will be understandably concerned as a result of this incident.”
