Drug-dealing suspect told Leeds court he wanted to return to his cell for John Wayne movie on TV

A drug-dealing suspect hinted during a court hearing that he wanted to return to his cell to continue watching a John Wayne movie on TV.

The 53-year-old man denied being involved in dealing cocaine and amphetamine in the Cross Flatts Park area of Leeds, and will stand trial next year.

Appearing at Leeds Crown Court over a video link from HMP Leeds this week, and prior to the judge entering the room, he excitedly told his barrister that a movie starring the all-American hero was on DMAX channel that morning.

Then partway through the hearing, when the judge was working to arrange his next court appearance, he shouted out again that the movie was on, appearing eager to leave the hearing and continue watching.

His barrister apologised to Judge Simon Phillips KC for his outburst, saying the man suffered from mental health issues.

The defendant had earlier became confused when asked to enter his pleas, claiming he had no clue what one of the drugs even was.

His trial is to take place in March of next year and he was remanded into custody until then.
