Another man, who was with Gibbs but has not been identified, joined in the attack.

The prosecutor said the victim was defenceless on the ground as he was attacked.

A group of people, including Gibbs' father and sister, tried to pull the defendant away but he continued the assault.

He was eventually restrained and detained at the club while police arrived.

The victim tried to get up but his leg gave way and he was unable to put any weight on it.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where it was discovered he had suffered breaks to both bones in his leg.

The man had to undergo surgery and a metal cage had to be placed around his leg for six months.

He was unable to work during that time and had to rely on family members for support.

Gibbs has a previous conviction for assaulting someone at the same social club.

Michael Walsh, mitigating, said Gibbs accepted that he would be facing a lengthy prison sentence and had pleaded guilty shortly before he was due to go on trial.

Mr Walsh added: "Mr Gibbs says to me today that there is nothing that can be said about the offence.

"He is loaded with regret at his own actions."

Gibbs was jailed for nine years and three months.

He must serve two-thirds of the sentence in custody before being released on licence.

Judge Simon Batiste said: "It was a brutal and sustained attack on a man who you knocked to the floor. He had done little or nothing to cause you to behave in the way you did."
