Dad arrested when police found cannabis in bedroom as they investigated disappearance of his son

Police officers kicked down a bedroom door and made the discovery during the incident at the house in Harehills.

Officers went to Nasar Ahmed's home on Torre Grove, Harehills after his son went missing on July 28, 2018.

Robert Galley, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court that police carry out a routine search of a missing person's home when their disappearance is reported.

Officers found a locked rear bedroom door during the search and Ahmed told them he did not have the key for it.

Mr Galley said the officers could smell cannabis and heard the sound of fans so forced the door.

Fourteen cannabis plants were growing in tubs in the bedroom.

The room was fitted with extractor fans and other growing equipment.

The electricity supply to the property had also been bypassed.

Cannabis was drying out on a washing line in the room.

The plants were capable of producing around a kilogram of the class B drug.

Ahmed was arrested and said he had decided to grow cannabis for his own use as he had previously been spending around £40 a day on the drug

Two mobile phones were found in the house but did not contain any text messages linking him to drug supply.

Ahmed, now of Conway Road, Harehills, pleaded guilty to producing cannabis.

Jonathan Devlin, mitigating, said Ahmed admitted the offence at an early stage and was receiving help to address his drug problems.

He was made the subject of a 12-month community order.

Ahmed was also ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work and complete ten rehabilitation activity requirement days.
