Stephen Kloda was locked up for six months over the attack on the woman at the property in Holbeck on July 26 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard the 65-year-old had been given a police caution three months before the incident for being violent towards the same woman.

Emma Downing, prosecuting, said Kloda and the victim had been in a relationship for one year before the attack.

The victim described how Kloda was often jealous of her relationships with other people.

On the evening of the attack she had been out socialising with friends at pubs in the Holbeck area.

Ms Downing said Kloda was upset because he did not want her to go out but he sent a text during the evening stating: 'Let's be friends."

She returned home in the early hours of the morning but the defendant became angry and shouted at her.

Kloda then punched her repeatedly in the face.

The prosecutor said the woman suffered a split lip and two of her front teeth were knocked out.

The defendant continued to attack her when she fell to the floor

The victim managed to dial 999 but Kloda attacked her again after she contacted police, grabbing her around the neck and strangling her.

Kloda left the property before police arrived but officers found him wandering in a street nearby.

He had no clothes on the top half of his body and was only wearing socks.

The officers described how Kloda appeared drunk and was slurring his words.

After he was arrested and taken into custody at Elland Road police station he said: "I'm gonna killer her when I get out of here.

"She is dead. I will kill her and her husband. That's a promise, not a threat."

The woman was taken to St James' hospital after the incident with bruising to her face, neck and legs.

Kloda was interviewed about the attack and said he could not remember much about what he had done.

He admitted to officers that he had a drink problem.

He pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Kloda was cautioned in April for punching her in the head after she made contact with her former husband.

Kloda, of Balm Walk, Holbeck, repeatedly asked the victim to drop the charge against him after the July attack.

Probation officer Mike Cooper told the court Kloda had said he felt ashamed about the attack during interview.

Mr Cooper said the defendant accepted that he had become controlling and possessive towards the victim.

Michael Walsh, mitigating, said Kloda pleaded guilty to the offence at an early stage and was no longer in a relationship with the woman.

Sentencing, Judge Christopher Batty said: "It may well be that at 65 you are lightly convicted.

"It may well be that the bully that you now are is not something that was within you when you were younger.

"But it is certainly there now and it is when you are in drink.

"She really thought that you might kill her.

"I am afraid you are going to go to custody today. This is just too serious."
