Controlling Leeds boyfriend bit woman's nose and made sickening rape threats to family

A vile boyfriend who controlled his partner’s life would attack her and make threats about raping members of her family if she defied him.

Teenager Carson Spencer banned the woman from working, would go through her phone and would not permit her to go anywhere without him, all under the threat of violence.

In one incident he bit her nose after being out to celebrate his birthday. Spencer was jailed after admitting a raft of offences at Leeds Crown Court.

The 18-year-old and the victim had been in a turbulent relationship in which he started pulling her hair in anger.

He hid her passport and then later ripped it up. Spencer told her there was also a tracker on her car and would go through her phone to delete messages sent by her family.

He also said he would hire someone to rape members of her family and rob others.

During an incident in August last year he bit her arm, pinned her to a bed and strangled her until she nearly passed out.

Days later they had another argument and she agreed to drive him to a location, but he kept pulling at the wheel of the vehicle to scare her. He kicked her and punched the windscreen, causing it to break.

Fearing for her safety, she was given accommodation at a woman’s refuge, but Spencer continued to contact her, sending her flowers, money and apologising.

Having rekindled their relationship, they went out in Headingley, socialising for his birthday on September 30, but the mood turned sour when he saw she had received a message on her phone.

He demanded they go home and punched her to the face. In the early hours of the next morning, he wanted driving to a petrol station.

He grabbed her by the throat and threatened to stab her, before biting her nose.

Spencer, of Torre Crescent, Burmantofts, was arrested three days later and refused to answer police questions.

Appearing in court via video link from HMP Doncaster, where he was being held on remand, he admitted coercive control, four counts of ABH, strangulation and common assault.

He has two previous convictions for four offences, including attacks on a previous partner.

Mitigating, Catherine Duffy said Spencer realised a custodial sentence was “inevitable”.

She added: “He knows his behaviour was totally unacceptable. He feels ashamed and feels he has been a total letdown.”

She said he was still only 18 and most of the offences were committed when he was just 17, when he was legally a child and grieving for the death of his grandparents.

Ms Duffy said a medical assessment suggested he had traits of emotional unstable personality disorder.

The judge, Recorder Geoffrey Pritchard KC, jailed him for 30 months and gave him a 10-year restraining order to keep him away from his victim.
