Chapeltown Carnival murderer Beni Nami has prison sentence extended after being found guilty of raping eight-year-old girl

A convicted killer serving a life sentence for stabbing a man to death at Chapeltown Carnival in Leeds has had his minimum term extended after being found guilty of raping an eight-year-old girl.

Beni Nami was told he must now serve at least 26 years behind bars after being convicted of two counts of rape of a child under the age of 13.

Nami was found guilty of the offences by a jury following a trial at Leeds Crown Court this week.

The 20-year-old was sentenced to life with a minimum of 20 years in December last year after being found guilty of murdering Tcherno Ly during the 2019 Chapeltown Carnival celebrations.

Nami, of Nassau Place, Chapeltown used a 'Rambo-style' knife to inflict the fatal knife wound to 21-year-old Mr Ly's chest as the two men fought on Chapeltown Road.

Nami and Mr Ly had fought with each other just over a fortnight previously and both were armed with knives on the night of the fatal stabbing.

Nami also suffered a knife wound to his chest as the two men fought.

A second defendant, Hussein Semusu, 21, of Grange Avenue, Chapeltown, was also found guilty of murder and told he must serve a minimum of 16 years in custody over his role in the killing.

"You were the person who brought the knife to the scene and you were the person who stabbed Mr Ly.."

"You have shown no remorse for the killing of Tcherno Ly."

Jurors in the rape trial heard this week how Nami committed the offences against the girl in 2018.

After being found guilty of the rape offences, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC told Nami he must serve a further six years in custody before he can apply to the parole board for release on licence.
