Burglar who raided disabled Middleton pensioner's home is jailed at Leeds Crown Court

A burglar who raided a disabled  pensioner's home in Leeds has been jailed for two-and-a-half-years.

William Gregg, 43, threw a brick through the window of the man's flat in Middleton before stealing items including two wallets, a TV and a Sony Playstation.

Nick Adlington, prosecuting, said the burglary happened at around 1am on September 24.

At around the same time, a member of the public saw Gregg's partner Sarah Samuels at the wheel of a Vauxhall Astra, which had crashed into a parked Range Rover on a nearby street.

Samuels, 39, drove off before stopping and Gregg approached the damaged Astra and tried to push it.

Mr Adlington said Greggs and Samuels left the car and walked home.

Police went to the couple's home and found them asleep in their living room.

Gregg had a ring stolen in the burglary and a stolen bank card was found on the mantelpiece.

Mr Adlington said Samuels had attempted to use the stolen bank card at a shop.

Gregg told police he had a cannabis grow in an upstairs room at the house and officers found nine cannabis plants capable of producing cannabis worth £4,950.

In a statement, the burglary victim told police: "I'm scared of being in my own home."

Gregg, of Sissons View, Middleton, admitted burglary and production of cannabis.

He has 13 previous convictions for 37 offences, including robbery and burglary.

Samuels, of Bodmin Street, Middleton, admitted handling stolen goods, permitting the production of cannabis, failing to stop after an accident, driving without insurance and otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Michael Walsh, mitigating for Gregg said his client had taken a wrong dose of his mental health medication before committing the burglary.

Probation officer Mick Berry said Samuels had been working on her drug and alcohol problems with Forward Leeds and is on a methadone prescription.

Mr Berry said her relationship with Gregg had deteriorated and she had returned to heavy drug and alcohol use.

Mr Berry said: "She accepted full responsibility for what she has done and expressed regret. She said 'it's nothing to be proud of.'"

Judge Mushtaq Khokar jailed Gregg for two-and-a-half-years and handed Samuels a 12 month community order plus 30 rehabilitation activity days.

Samuels was banned from driving for six months.
