Burglar struck at Leeds care home and primary school during crime spree

A drug addict  who burgled a care home and a school during a crime spree in Leeds has been jailed.

Tyson Brennan, who suffers from schizophrenia, committed a string of offences over an eight week period to fund his drug habit, Leeds Crown Court heard.

Brennan, 33, stole a teacher's £500 mobile phone from a desk after walking into Bankside Primary School in Harehills on August 24 2020.

Brennan, of Spencer Place, Chapeltown, stole a TV, a computer, and an industrial iron during a burglary at Atkinson Court care home in Osmondthope on September 4.

Prosecutor Felicity Hemlin said Brennan was caught on CCTV stealing Play-Doh worth more than £50 from a shop at the White Rose shopping centre on July 14.

On July 16 Brennan stole cosmetics worth £321 from Boots at Kirkstall and was caught on CCTV driving away in a stolen white Toyota Yaris

On July 18, police arrested Brennan after he was spotted in the stolen Toyota Yaris in the KFC car park at Hunslet Retail Park.

He admitted handling the stolen car.

Miss Hemlin said Brennan stole items including clothes, keys and tools from a HGV parked on Shafton Lane at Holbeck on August 13.

Brennan's DNA was found on a juice bottle found in the cab.

On July 16 Brennan stole mobile phone accessories from a shop at the White Rose shopping centre.

On August 22 he stole tools worth more than £700 from a business in Holbeck.

On September 2, Brennan stole a wallet containing cards and £300 cash from a car parked on Rookwood Avenue in Osmondthorpe and fraudulently used a bank card.

On September 12 Brennan punched a security guard at a shopping centre in Doncaster.

Brennan committed a total of 17 offences between July 14 and September 12 2020.

He admitted five burglaries, seven thefts, three charges of fraud, one charge of handling stolen goods and one assault.

The court heard he has 15 previous convictions for 64 offences, including robbery, theft and burglary.

Mark Foley, mitigating, said Brennan suffers from schizophrenia and was made the subject of a hospital order in 2018, before being conditionally discharged from hospital in May 2020.

Mr Foley said Brennan's offending was committed to get money to fund his drug habit, adding: "He is someone who is blighted by mental illness, which makes resistance to that addiction far more difficult."

Recorder Mark McKone jailed Brennan for 22 months.
