Bully dad who attacked Leeds daughter and wife told: 'Your brutality has caught up with you'

A daughter who was attacked by her father told him in court: “Your lies and brutality have caught up with you”.

Paul Walton was jailed at Leeds Crown Court after being found guilty of the attack, and an assault on his wife.

In a victim impact statement, written by his daughter and read to the court during his sentencing hearing, she described him as being a “Jekyll and Hyde” character and added: “Violence was your way of trying to silence us.”

The court heard that self-employed joiner Walton and his wife had been together 36 years but their relationship “featured domestic violence”.

In June 2023 the mother and daughter had arrived back at their Garforth home together but were arguing, with the daughter going to her room and slamming the door.

Walton flung the door to the bedroom open and jumped on her, punching her to the face several times, shouting at her about slamming doors.

He then grabbed her by the neck by one hand and squeezed, before releasing his grip.

The girl ran down the stairs with Walton grabbing her by the hair and “bashing” her head into the banister.

On August 11, 2024, Walton’s wife noticed he was receiving messages on his phone with heart emojis. She quizzed him and he told her she was “seeing things”.

She later found it was messages from another woman, but Walton told her it was her fault finding the messages. He began to punch her, bent her fingers back and grabbed her by the throat. Walton then left.

The 59-year-old, now of Wroot Road, Finningley, Doncaster, denied all offences but was found guilty after a trial of ABH and strangulation on his daughter, and assault on his wife. He has one previous conviction for a public order offence.

Mitigating, Mollie Briggs said Walton had “some insight” into his behaviour and despite denying the offences, had “demonstrated a degree of remorse”.

Judge Howard Crowson said a probation report into Walton suggested he still continues to “minimise his actions”.

He jailed him for three years. He also gave him a restraining order to keep him away from both his wife and daughter.
