Thornbury Barracks roundabout on Leeds Road in Bradford was closed this afternoon by Northern Gas Networks. West Yorkshire Police were on hand to help with the closure.
The company said emergency response engineers were carrying out essential repair work to a medium pressure gas main after ‘third party damage’, but declined to say how the damage had been caused.
A spokesman said: “Unfortunately this is causing some disruption to traffic travelling between Bradford and Leeds.”
Customer Operations Area Manager Paul Sadler said: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused while we carry out our emergency work and would like to reassure members of the public that we will do all we can to complete this work as quickly as possible.”

“If you smell gas you should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately, your call will be answered at any time of day or night and an engineer will be sent out to assess the situation promptly.”
West Yorkshire Police said it had received no report of any criminal offence relating to the gas main, but that Northern Gas Networks had reported a “blown” pipe.
