Armed robbers raided a cash-in-transit van outside Tesco in Leeds.

It happened at about 6.40am at the Tesco Express in Wakefield Road, Swillington.

Two men armed with a hammer and a metal bar threatened the security guard.

They then stole a cashbox containing cash.

The men then fled the scene in a dark-coloured car and drove off along Church Lane.

The cashbox was found empty a short time later in Swillington Lane.

Detective Inspector Al Cheyne, of Leeds District CID, said: “We are carrying out extensive enquiries to identify those responsible and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw the offenders or the vehicle in the area.

“We would also like to speak to anyone who saw them abandoning the empty cashbox in Swillington Lane.

“No-one was injured during the robbery but it was clearly a distressing experience for the security guard and those who witnessed it.”
