Armed police search for 'machete' wielding suspect after city centre fight as business owners lockdown shops

Police are searching for a knife-wielding suspect after a fight on Briggate tonight - which forced a number of local shops and businesses to lockdown their premises for their own safety.

Officers were called to reports of the fight at 5.25pm on Monday afternoon (May 17).

The fight was reported to have involved about three or four people.

One of the suspects was said to have had a knife in a case, police said.

No injuries were reported and no suspects were present on arrival, police confirmed.

Enquiries were made in the area by officers to locate the suspects, but to no gain.

Further enquiries are being made, police said.

One Cafe owner said he ran inside his shop and locked the door after spotting a man "waving around what looked like a huge machete".

The owner told the YEP: "It was all rather scary.

"I heard a commotion and went to see what happened, then saw a guy waving around what looked like a huge machete.

"I ran into my shop, locked the door & then fairly soon after I saw armed police running around clearly looking for the guy."

The owner said other shops near the incident also closed their doors as police hunted for the suspects.
