Islam, of no fixed address, was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

He denied carrying out the offending during a trial, claiming the victim, her father and sister had tried to "frame" him.

"Ever since he has been in prison I have been able to breath again."

The mum described how she is still haunted by the attack, saying: "Had there been a weapon in the room, would I have been dead that night?

"Would my son be left without a mother?"

Islam's five-year sentence is the maximum that can be imposed for actual bodily harm.

He must serve a four-year custodial term, of which he must spend a minimum of two-thirds in custody, followed by a further year on licence.

Judge Simon Phillips QC said: "This was a premeditated break-in by you at her home at night in breach of bail conditions and involved a terrifying, vicious, humiliating, sustained attack on her.

"It left her traumatised with a broken nose, having sustained a brutal beating and extensive injuries.

"Consumed with jealousy you set out to hunt her down.

"The jury saw she was no match for you physically, being built as powerfully as you are.

"Your offending scales the heights of the most serious of assault occasioning actual bodily harm offending.

"This was not the first time you had been violent towards her.

"There are no mitigating features.

"There is no reduction for remorse, because you have none."
