7 of the biggest developments being built in Leeds right now

Numerous multi-million pound construction schemes are underway in Leeds – here are seven of the biggest.

1) Leeds City Station

The £17.3million southern entrance, near Little Neville Street, is expected to open in the next couple of months and will also see the creation of a new £500,000 pedestrianised zone funded by developers and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

2) Victoria Gate

The £150m retail complex on The Headrow will include a casino, arcades and a flagship John Lewis store.

It is due to open in 2016.

3) Dakota Hotel

Greek Street is in the middle of a major makeover.

The former stacker car park has gone along with the much-loved Akbar’s restaurant, as work gets underway on a new £12m luxury hotel.

The 10-storey, 90-bed Dakota Hotel will include a basement restaurant with a ground floor bar.

It’s set to be completed in 2016.

4) Wellington Place

A handful of new buildings will be built along with a stylish new public square at this spot in Leeds city centre.

The park, called Tower Square, is one part of the Wellington Place office development off Whitehall Road.

Covering 54,000 sq ft and due to open in 2016, developer MEPC says it will be “one of the largest and most prominent public spaces in Leeds”.

The Old Wagon Hoist – a structure that dates back to 1850 – will remain at the heart of the square as a nod to the city’s industrial heritage.

Work is already under way on 6 Wellington Place, six floors of state-of-the-art office and retail space that will overlook the square.

The building’s neighbour, 10 Wellington Place, was completed in April last year and is now 80 per cent let.

5) Central Square

The £100m, 11-storey development takes over the old Lumiere site and will have more than 200,000 sq feet of space, including an impressive atrium with a winter garden, restaurants and cafes.

The skyscraper will also have a rooftop “sky garden” and outside terrace.

The building, sandwiched between Wellington Street and Whitehall Road near the rail station, has already been partly pre-let to accountants PwC.

6) Hilton Hotel

The new £32m Hilton hotel is being on Woodhouse Lane, near Leeds’s First Direct Arena.

The scheme was put on hold after GB Group Holdings, which was involved in the construction, went into administration earlier this year.

However, the Leeds City Region Local Enterprise Partnership has issued reassurances that work will continue on the site.

7) Tower Works

The Tower Works site in Holbeck Urban Village was an historic pin factory that produced steel pins from 1860 to 1981.

The Engine House and famed Italianate towers are two of most recognisable of the five listed structures and part of the site has already been developed into office space.

But there are more plans in the pipeline as part of an £80m masterplan.

The Grade II-listed Engine House complex could house an art-house cinema and boutique brewery whilst another part of the site will be transformed into 90,000sq ft of office space, 24,000sq ft of retail, restaurant and bar space and a mix of apartments and town houses.
