140mph police chase drink driver from Beeston is jailed at Leeds Crown Court after lockdown pursuit

A drink driver who reached speeds of 140mph during a police chase in Leeds has been jailed.

Khalid Yaqub was almost twice the drink drive limit when he hit 140mph on the M62 and 126mph on the M621 during the pursuit, which last just under 11 miles

Leeds Crown Court heard police spotted Yaqub driving at up to 80mph in a 20mph zone on Tempest Road, Beeston, as he headed towards Dewsbury Road at around 10pm on April 10 - at the height of the Covid-19 full lockdown.

Elizabeth Noble, prosecuting, said officers followed and spoke toYaqub through the car's open window when he stopped at a junction.

Police asked 37-year-old Yaqub to turn off the car's engine, but he drove off at speed towards the White Rose shopping centre.

He went straight across a junction without giving way and travelled at around 100mph before police lost sight of his car.

Yaqub, of Sefton Avenue, Beeston, got on to the eastbound M62 at junction 28 at and drove at 140mph before getting on the M1 northbound heading back to Leeds at speeds up to 115mph.

Miss Noble said he started to slow down and pulled on to the hard shoulder before two passengers got out of the car.

Father-of-two Yaqub set off again and slammed on his brakes whern police tried to stop him.

He drove at 126 mph in a 50mph limit zone on the M621 and exited onto Tunstall Road, where he almost crashed into another vehicle.

Yaqub went through a red light on Tunstall Road at up to 79mph and went back on the M621, travelling at 111mph.

He exited the M621 and drove at 70mph in a 30mph zone on Domestic Street before stopping the car nearby.

He was arrested and breathalysed and found to be nearly twice the drink drive limit.

Yaqub admitted dangerous driving, drink driving and failing to stop .

Richard Wright, mitigating, said Yaqub was estranged from his wife and he had moved back in with his parents.

Mr Wright said Yaqub had set up a business which had failed 18 months before the offence and he had financial problems.

He said Yaqub was driving to a shop when he saw two people he knew who got in the car.

The court heard they were drinking and Yaqub joined in and "drank too much."

Mr Wright said: "He was driving like an idiot, He accepts that. The defendant is remorseful. He accepts what he did was totally unacceptable.

"This is a law abiding, decent family who are shocked and stunned by what he has done."

Judge Mushtaq Khokar jailed Yaqub for eight months and banned him from driving for 27 months.
