Castleford: Library opens again after major revamp

The library, run by Wakefield Council, has new furniture and lighting and has been redecorated.

The council say the modernisation has made it “lighter, brighter and more welcoming to visitors”.

People can meet, learn and study at the new-look library, as well as taking part in events and activities.

Coun Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport reopened the library last week.

He said: “I’m very pleased that we have such a welcoming space which is very flexible.

“As well as offering our traditional library services, we can hold lots of different events and activities for adults and children to get involved in and enjoy.”

The council said the library, which closed for refurbishment in December, had been designed to be both family and dementia friendly.

Babies can become library members from birth, and the library will support mothers wishing to breastfeed.

The council is also working with local people to open up a community garden at the library for visitors to enjoy.

The library is part of the Airedale Centre, which also runs adult education classes, a children’s centre and cafe.
