Campaign highlights the risks of speeding

Road safety charity Brake made the video as part of a series of Beep Beep! Days for youngsters.

The events aim to help children understand road safety and remind adults of the need to protect children on the road.

The Speeding Is Naughty short film includes young campaigners and urges parents and motorists not to put lives at risk by flouting limits.

Alice Bailey, campaigns adviser for Brake, said: “It was so much fun being involved with the talented youngsters who helped Brake make this year’s Beep Beep! video, but road safety really isn’t child’s play.

“Forty children are killed or seriously injured on Great Britain’s roads every week.

“Beep Beep! Days are a great way to start talking to children about basic road safety messages and also to remind parents, carers and all other adults of their responsibilities when it comes to keeping our roads safe and protecting little lives.”

The campaign video comes after a survey by Brake and Churchill Insurance revealed almost half of drivers polled broke a 20mph speed limit last year.

It also showed that a quarter of drivers admitted to driving too fast in a 20mph area at least once-a-month. And 20 per cent of motorists surveyed said they break a 20mph speed limit on a weekly basis.

The first Beep Beep! Day took place last Wednesday and coincided with the release of the campaign video.

Steve Barrett, head of Churchill Car Insurance, said: “Too many children die or are seriously injured on our roads each week. Beep Beep! Day is a great way of starting to educate young children on road safety, as well as raising awareness among drivers, including parents and grandparents, of the need to drive with extreme care when young children are about.”

SURVEY REVEALS EXTENT OF SPEEDING

The results of a new survey conducted by road safety charity Brake and Churchill Insurance about 20mph speed limits have been revealed.

The survey showed:

Nearly half of motorists polled said they broke a 20mph speed limit by at least 5mph last year.

A quarter of drivers admitted to driving too fast in a 20mph area at least once-a-month.

20 per cent of motorists said they break a 20mph speed limit on a weekly basis.

Almost three quarters of those questioned said they think traffic is too fast for the safety of children and adults on foot or bike on some roads.
