Bowie tribute at Leeds cinema

The rock legend died of cancer on Sunday aged 69.

He starred as Jareth the Goblin King in the 1986 cult classic, and Hyde Park Picturehouse on Brudenell Road originally planned to show the film on Saturday January 16 to mark both the anniversary and Bowie’s 69th birthday.

But after his death was announced, managers at the cinema decided the screening would go ahead as a celebration of his work.

General Manager Wendy Cook said: “Although we did decide to put the screening on for the anniversary, it’s really sad that it’s taken a different turn.

“The screening actually sold out about two weeks ago anyway, we posted it on our Facebook page and it really jumped off.

“It’s going to be a full house - the cinema sits about 270 people. I really think it’s going to be a beautiful tribute.”

The cinema are planning to create a tribute film to screen before ‘Labyrinth’. Ms Cook said: “We want it to be a celebration, a place for people to come together and appreciate him.”

Staff were inundated yesterday with calls from Bowie fans pleading for tickets, and have organised a separate screening on January 20 for those who missed out.

They are also appealing for fans to get in touch and tell them what other Bowie films they’d like to be screened.

Ms Cook said people attending the screening are more than welcome to dress up as Bowie or their favourite ‘Labyrinth’ character.

The film is one of Bowie’s most celebrated, and his hit song ‘Magic Dance’ features in its soundtrack.

Bowie has been mourned all over the world since his death was announced, but Ms Cook hopes that the film screening will be more of a celebration.

She said: “Since the news broke, it’s felt like I’ve had a constant playlist in my head, but it makes me smile. I’m sad but he left such a legacy, it’s a gift.”
