£112,000 skate park inspired by late Leeds skater to open in Leeds

Plans for the new £112,000 facility at Springhead Park, Rothwell, were sparked by the 8010 Association inspired by Daniel Parrinder, who died in a car accident in 2014.

Grant funding and Section 106 funds from housing developers helped to make the park a reality in place of existing ramps deemed “dangerous” when wet. It will open on Saturday April 16.

The new design features a 1.4-metre quarter pipe, flat bank hip, Miami bank, pump bump and down hubba suitable for skateboarders, rollerskaters, in-line skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders.

Debbie Richardson, from the 8010 Association, said: “I’m so proud of our local young skaters who sought support from local councillors to spearhead this project.

“They initiated a successful campaign to have the new purpose built skate park created in memory of their close friend Daniel Parrinder – an inspirational local skater.

“The new skate park offers a wealth of exciting challenges where young people can meet, socialise and use their creative energy to promote healthy physical exercise.”

The 8010 Association-led campaign was supported by the Groundwork charity, Leeds City Council, ward councillors and The Works charity.

Jon Crossley, capital programme coordinator at Groundwork, said: “This has been a great project to be involved in. We do a lot of work around creating better places and this project is transforming an ineffective and under-used skate park into one that many young people from Rothwell and neighbouring communities will come to use.”

Coun David Nagle (Lab, Rothwell) added: “It is a tribute to all of those who have put so much work in to get to this point and I am particularly pleased that young people have been involved from the very start.

“This new skate park will be a great addition to Springhead Park.”
