All Poundworld stores and Normanton headquarters to close

Almost 300 jobs will be lost at Poundworld's headquarters in Normanton today and the remainder of the nationwide stores will shut next month, it has been announced.

The firm was put into administration in June and a buyer was sought, but no deal has been struck.

Forty stores closed in the first round of cuts, including the store in The Ridings, as well as almost 100 jobs at the headquarters.

Last week it was revealed that a further 25 were to shut, and then it was confirmed another 80 would go by next week, including Castleford’s Carlton Street store.

Now all have been earmarked, with the remaining 299 employees at the Normanton headquarters set to go today.

In total, 5,100 are either facing redundancy or have been made redundant.

It has since been reported that Chris Edwards, who launched the company in 1974 in Wakefield before selling it in 2015, is in talks to buy back some of the stores.
