Beginners tips:

Get the right kit! - “A good variety of hand tools are essential to start with, these are only a few pounds in any DIY store.

"For beginners I always recommend battery or electric hedge trimmers, lawn mowers and strimmers – as petrol tools require more maintenance”.

Start simple: “My favourite beginner plant is a strawberry, they are easy to grow with not much space required.

"You can buy all the seeds for these at most nurseries or car boot sales”

Expand your knowledge: “Read books on the subject, watch gardening programs on TV and be brave and explore, gardening is a never ending learning experience”

Garden in your community: “Joining a local allotment group is a good idea, there are nice people and are a great place to share ideas and knowledge.

Gardening jobs for June:

Andrew Culloden, manager of the nursery at the Arium in Leeds, gave us a list of five gardening tasks that you should be completing this month.

Weeding: “Deal with weeds as soon as they emerge, this leaves less work for the rest of the summer. Try to remove all weed with their roots so that they don’t return, the sooner the better”.

Summer bedding plants: “Get these planted now, this is the perfect time to add a splash of colour to your garden”

Tall plants: “You should look out for tall plants in June, stake and tie them up to offer support to the plant as they grow and start to flower”

Feed and water: “Check all containers daily to make sure that all of your plants are being provided with the right amount of water and feed, in the sun this is very important”

Pruning: “Any plants that have flowered this year should be given a light pruning, this means they will be in top condition for next year when they flower again”.
