Karen Wright: Taking a trip down seafront memory lane
I managed to squeeze in another break away with my Mum and John a couple of weeks ago. As it’s all systems go at home with hospital appointments coming in thick and fast, it was fabulous to have a break.
This time we book a hotel over on the west coast at St Annes on Sea near Lytham. The hotel package was bed, breakfast and evening meal with free drinks from six in the evening. It was a lovely hotel, and our room overlooked the sea. After our evening meal each evening we settled down to play board games until the entertainment started.

On the Sunday we took a taxi into Lytham which we heard was the ‘posh’ end of town and it certainly was very nice indeed, lots of boutique shops and restaurants. We sat at a pavement cafe and enjoyed a coffee and a freshly made scone. I investigated if it was possible to get my mum's mobility scooter onto a bus and discovered it was. We made the decision to get on a bus and stay on it to the terminus at Cleveleys and stay in our seats and ride the bus all the way back again but alight at a stop near our hotel.
The bus took us right past Blackpool Tower, and this brought back very fond memories of a trip I made when I was about ten. On that occasion it was just my Mum and myself that travelled to Blackpool. We didn't book accommodation in advance, and I clearly remember the rather run down B&B that we found had vacancies. True to form the landlady asked us to leave after breakfast and not to return until late afternoon.
It was at a time when the blockbuster film Doctor Zhivago was on at the cinema, and we had already been to see it, and mum had made me a military style red cape with epaulets as they were all the rage. I wore it as we walked along in Blackpool, and I spotted the donkey rides. I chose my donkey and as I sat astride, I had visions of me galloping along the beach with my cape flowing behind me. Unfortunately, my donkey had other ideas and refused to budge! Oh, happy days!
We very much enjoyed our trip down memory lane and the sun did in fact shine as an extra bonus!
