A JD Wetherspoon pub that was demolished to make way for student accommodation will be open again this summer.

The Stick or Twist, popular with music lovers looking for a pre-gig pint at Leeds Arena, closed in 2018.

The Merrion Way pub, which first opened in 1997, was demolished by the landlord of the property in order to build a new unit with student accommodation above.

Unite Group PLC were given permission to build two tower blocks, one 27-storey and one with 15 floors, on Merrion Way, Tower House Street and Brunswick Terrace, in summer 2018.

Wetherspoon is to spend £1.8 million redeveloping the pub and around 60 jobs will be created.

Building work will start on April 5, with the venue set to open on July 6.

The new look pub will be 25 per cent larger and the open kitchen will be double the original size.

The pub will all be on one level and will have outside terraces to the front and side of the building, with bifold doors opening onto it from the pub.

Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We are delighted that The Stick or Twist is set to open once again.

“The pub was open for 21 years and was extremely popular.

"We are confident that existing as well as new customers will welcome the pub’s reopening and be impressed with its new look.
