New gin school teaching people how to distil own gin to launch in Leeds

Nelson’s Distillery and School, based in Staffordshire, is undergoing a major expansion plan and opening up in the city.

It is set to launch in the Hilton Leeds City hotel, on Neville Street.

An opening day has yet to be announced, and is subject to Covid-19 restrictions, but the school is expected to launch in September.

Former chef Neil Harrison launched the business in 2016 at its headquarters in Uttoxeter.

Neil said: “Just like for any business, the recent economic climate has been challenging for us.

“Thankfully, we have still seen strong demand for our products and our gin school in Uttoxeter has now reopened adhering to Covid-19 guidelines.

“That has meant that we have been able to continue with our expansion plans and will open new schools in Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.

“Not only will this create an economic boost to these cities, it will also offer an extra source of entertainment for people looking to try something new and different in a safe way after what has been a testing year for everyone.”

To mark the opening, Nelson’s will be continuing its commitment to mark the effort of key workers and others during recent months.

Nelson’s will hold a “heroes day” at each of its four locations for those who have been on the frontline during the battle against Covid-19.

Around 180 nominations have been received, with more than half invited to participate in a gin school and the remainder given the opportuniy to attend the Uttoxeter base for a Tour, Talk and Taste event.

Neil added: “In our own small way, we wanted to recognise the outstanding work being done by people who are very much the heroes of the battle against Covid-19.

“The Heroes Day prizes are valued in excess of £10,000 and, with the donations from the NHS gin, we are delighted to have given back more than £40,000 to those who have contributed most to the country during this difficult period.”
