It's just over a week since bars and restaurants have been allowed to open outside.

For me and my dining partner, Mommy Thai was a spontaneous treat while on a flying visit to the city centre.

The simple table and chairs set-up on the pavement reminded me of my visit to Thailand many moons ago, where locals sit outside hunched over hot bowls of steaming goodness.

What drew my eyes immediately at Mommy Thai was the prices - £9.95 for a starter, main and alcoholic drink (£8.95 for a soft drink), all day, every day.

And to top it off, that included everything on the menu, not just a small selection of the cheaper dishes.

I almost felt guilty taking advantage of such an offer, particularly in light of how gruelling lockdown must have been been for them, as with so many other Leeds hospitality businesses. As a true-to-type stingy Yorkshireman, I was pretty much sold on the place already - but what about the food?

The starters and mains came out together, plus our drinks of a Singha beer and a glass of red wine.

I chose the Thai fish cakes, which came with sweet chilli dip and peanut. They were juicy and tasty, but I felt they could have packed a little more punch.

The real treat came as I tucked into my main - a noodle soup in yellow curry, with tofu, spring greens and crispy noodles and shallots on top.

It was a big, hearty bowl of the stuff, with a warm and deep flavour and plenty of noodles and tofu - everything I was after, basically.

My partner said her vegetable tempura starter had plenty of both the veg and the batter, without being too oily.

Her Massaman curry main was a hit too, served with loads of chicken and veg.

The bill came to £27.40 (we paid a bit extra for a larger beer and the wine), but you could easily eat like a king here for less than £20 for two.

Leeds has plenty of good Thai restaurants, but if you're looking for a brilliant value meal, Mommy Thai must be hard to beat.
