Five Leeds pubs named among the best in the country - including 'undeniable treasure'

Five Leeds pubs have been named among the best in the country, scooping a place in a national top 500 list.
The Telegraph has just released its second annual Best Pubs in the UK guide, highlighting pubs with charming character, welcoming staff, rich history and award-winning beer.
Whitelock’s in the city centre and The Cardigan Arms in Burley have made the list for the second year running, while three other Leeds pubs have been newly added.
The Victoria and Commercial, opened by the teams behind Kirkstall Brewery and Whitelock’s at the end of last year, has scooped a spot on the guide.
The Telegraph’s reviewer praised the “magnificent pub” which had been “recently and beautifully restored, with acres of etched glass and carved wood”.
The much-acclaimed The Highland Laddie has also been named one of the best pubs in the country - adding to its growing list of national accolades.
The reviewer said: “Few pubs have been so feverishly discussed over the past year as the Highland Laddie.
“This two-room corner pub’s inventive grub has left national newspaper critics purring, but the beer is pretty good, too. It’s a small pub, a little out of the way, but worth the trip even if you’re not eating.
“There’s plenty of space for drinkers, and the space is beautifully designed – particularly the front room, with its curved claret banquette and freshly lacquered wooden bar.”
The Grove Inn in Holbeck is the final Leeds newcomer on the list, and was hailed as one of the city's “undeniable treasures” with “huge charm”.
And just across the Leeds border, the Hermit Inn in Burley in Wharfedale retained its place on the Telegraph’s Top 500 list for the second year running.
