What is The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two about?

The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two takes place two years after 2018’s original, and finds siblings Kate and Teddy Pierce dealing with consequences of the events of the last film.

A lot has changed in that time, and Kate, now a cynical teenager, is reluctantly spending Christmas in Cancun with her mum’s new boyfriend and his son Jack.

Kate’s unwilling to accept this new version of her family, and so decides to run away. But soon enough, a mysterious, magical troublemaker named Belsnickel threatens to destroy the North Pole and end Christmas for good.

That won’t stand, and Kate and Jack are unexpectedly pulled back towards adventure, embarking on a new journey with Santa Claus himself.

Who stars in it?

Many of the central cast return and reprise their roles from the first film, including 13-year old Darby Camp (who may be familiar to TV fans through her role in HBO’s Big Little Lies) as central character Kate Price.

Judah Lewis – known for his main roles in Netflix’s The Babysitter and its sequel The Babysitter: Killer Queen – returns as rebellious older brother Teddy Pierce, and screen legend Kurt Russell is back as Santa Claus.

Russell’s real-life partner Goldie Hawn stars alongside him as Mrs Clause, having made a cameo at the very end of the first instalment, and director Chris Columbus even hinted in an interview with People magazine that more members of Russell and Hawn’s sprawling family could make cameos in the sequel.

Julian Dennison - best known for his role in Taika Waititi’s 2016 adventure comedy, Hunt for the Wilderpeople – is villain of the piece, Belsnickel, and the cast also includes Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Nashville), Tyrese Gibson (the Fast & Furious franchise) and Darlene Love (the Lethal Weapon movies).

Who directed it?

The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two is directed by Home Alone and Harry Potter director Chris Columbus, who served as producer on the first film.

That first instalment was directed by Clay Kaytis, an animator best known for directing the The Angry Birds Movie, and for once being the head of animation at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Kaytis was set to direct the Christmas Chronicles sequel, but dropped out of the project, leaving Columbus to be promoted to director instead.

Chris Columbus certainly has form when it comes to producing Christmas hits, having directed 1990’s Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and was also the man behind the camera for films like Mrs. Doubtfire and the first two films in the Harry Potter movie franchise.

When can I see it?

The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two was released on Netflix on Wednesday 25 December 2020, where both of the two films are available to stream.
