Leeds couple create staggering Candy Lane Christmas street attracting hundreds of visitors

The parade has turned part of The Crescent in Garforth into the newly named ‘Candy Lane’ which attracted nearly 300 visitors over the weekend.

May and Rod Proctor, aged 70 and 72, decorated their street as an alternative to going into their grandchildren’s school to decorate Santa’s Grotto as they have done in previous years.

Apart from the lights, the couple made everything themselves, including candy canes, nutcrackers, gingerbread houses and snowmen.

The couple have been isolating and wanted to keep themselves occupied during the second lockdown.

Mother of three, and grandmother, May, said: “I just feel so sorry for all the kids this year and especially my grandkids who I haven’t properly been able to see.

“I wanted to do something that they would enjoy so I’ve made a candy shop.

“I looked after my grandson whilst his parents worked and he switched all the lights on which was special as he is only four years old.

“People came from all over the place to see the lights this weekend, some people said they had come all the way from Castleford.”

May said she could not believe the response she had had from her decorations and that everybody had “gone mental” for the candy themed lane.

She added: “We’re like two little elves on The Crescent.

“I got some stuff from the pound shops and Home Bargains but most things came from eBay, and I had some curtain rods left over that I used for the candy canes.

“I don’t do this professionally but I just love doing it. We’re all really creative.”

May celebrated her 70th birthday in July, where she was able to see some close family members when rules had been relaxed.

The lights will stay on display until the new year.
