Why the 1985 holiday season at Leeds and Bradford Airport got off to a quiet start

This 260-seat Boeing 767 which flew out holidaymakers to Majorca in May 1985 was claimed to be much less noisy than the 737s already using the airport.

Hailed as the latest thing in high-technology jets, the Britannia Airways aircraft was due to fly out to Palma on the holiday island for Thomson Holidays every Thursday until October.

Bill Savage, Leeds and Bradford Airport's assistant director said at the time: "We have already had phone calls from local residents saying if that's a taste of the future they want more of it. They said it was a particularly quiet jet."

Richard Allen, Thomson Holidays regional sales manager, said as well as being quieter than the 737, the 767 was roomier and more economical on fuel.

Thomson's had previously been using the 737s on two Thursday afternoon flights from Leeds and Bradford Airport taking off within half an hour of each other. The plane arrived with 116 passengers from Majorca before taking off on the return journey an hour later with 243 Yorkshire holidaymakers.
