When Leeds boasted one of the world's most most boring jobs

Some people think watching paint dry is boring and others prefer staring at a wall.

For builder Colin Hartley it was almost a combination of the two.

He was charged with what most people would consider one of the most boring jobs in the world.

He was in charge of repointing the wall which runs around the Harewood estate.

Former herdsman Mr Hartley had been tackling the mammoth job on and off since 1985.

And when your YEP photographed him at work in October 1990 he said it might take him another two and a half years to complete the remaining few miles.

On a good day, he managed to repoint 23 square yards of stone.

He said: “ Lots of drivers wave to me as they pass by. I spend much of the time hoping I don’t get knocked down.”
