The Yorkshire derby win which proved a tactical triumph for Sgt Wilko

It was a promotion-chasing win which proved a tactical triumph for Sgt Wilko.

Leeds United had suffered a dip in form ahead of the visit of Sheffield United to Elland Road in April 1990. The Whites had lost two and drawn two of their previous four league games and the Blades were pushing United hard in the chase for the Second Division title. But Howard Wilkinson' s plan to pressurise the Blades keeper at every possible opportunity paid rich dividends as the Whites enjoyed a 4-0 win. "I did it in a bid to affect the direction of his kicks because they were very important to Sheffield United," he reflected afterwards "But I told my strikers to make sure that if they stood up on (Simon) Tracey to stand four yards off him so there could be no possibility of the referee deeming that they were deliberately trying to obstruct his kicks." The goals came courtesy of a brace from Gordon Strachan, including one from the penalty spot, Lee Chapman and Gary Speed. Leeds would go on to win the title on goal difference from the Blades.
