The ups and downs of Leeds United's Elland Road down the decades

It's a ground which has endured its fair share of ups and downs through the years.

Elland Road has been home to Leeds United since the club's formation in 1919. As all Leeds United fans will testify it has hosted its fair share and highs and lows down on and off the pitch down the decades. These rarely-seen photos, plucked from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of Varley Picture Agency, chart its history and heritage as well as how in the mid-1950s it rose from the ashes. The new stand had of 4,000 seats mounted behind a paddock, which could hold a 6,000 standing spectators.

The Spion Kop terracing was stripped away to make way for a new stand in the late 1960s.

The roofed structure was built in less than six weeks and became known as the Gelderd End.

When completed it left around 60ft (18 m) of land behind the goal which was turfed and the pitch moved 30ft.
