The night David O'Leary's Leeds United young guns came of age

It proved to be a landmark coming of age performance from David O'Leary's young guns.

The Whites displayed a maturity and unbridled passion against Spartak Moscow under the Elland Road floodlights on a European night to remember in December 1999. Their passage into the UEFA Cup fourth round was sealed amid high drama in front of an ecstatic crowd after a compelling tie brimming with endeavour, high-quality football and no shortage of tension. 'The Chief stoops to conquer' read the headline on the back page of your YEP after an 84th-minute header from the captain Lucas Radebe proved the difference. The build to the game had been mired in bad blood following Leeds United' s refusal to play on the Russians' frozen-solid surface in -20 degree conditions two weeks previous. The first leg was eventually played in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and had finished 2-1 to the Russians with Harry Kewell scoring an all important away goal.
