The day Wetherall helped Leeds United dent the crown of champions

"Leeds dent crown of champions" read the headline after a win to remember for the Elland Road faithful.

Defender David Wetherall was the hero in white after his goal helped Leeds United beat arch rivals Manchester United at Elland Road in September 1997. He rose above Gary Pallister in the 34th minute before thumping a header past the hesitant Peter Schmeichel to seal a 1-0 win. The result ended Manchester United's unbeaten record and helped Leeds United achieve their first victory at home. Leeds United went on to finish the season in fifth place while Manchester United ended as runners-up behind champions Arsenal. READ MORE: 16 of the most iconic Leeds United photos of all time
