The changing face of Crossgates in the 1970s

These photos showcase the changing face of Crossgates during the 1970s.

They focus on street scenes as well as local landmarks during a decade which brought enormous social and economic change to the LS15 community. This included the removal of gas laps at Cross Gates Station which had stood proud for more than 60 years. The suburb's Arndale Shopping Centre was proving a hit with shoppers thanks to its modern, attractive design, ambient atmosphere and large variety of shops. Soon business was doing very well, with retailers competing with each other to gain a place within the luxurious new development, attracting over 15,000 people a week.
