Memories of the York Road barber's cabin

It boasted a chair reputedly 80 years old, a steam radio donated by a customer, strip lighting which had not been replaced for two decades and faded boxing photos on the wall.

The barber's cabin on York Road at East End Park boasted memories of bygone days.

And for 43 years it had been the workshop of veteran barber Danny Green who had decided to retire in June 1992 when this photo was taken.

His war wound had finally caught up with him and the 75-year-old found it tiring to stand on his feet.

"I will miss it very much ," he told the YEP. "I don't call the people customers - I call them friends. I know the modern styles within reason though I don't really want to bother with them. But I do a fair variety, not just short back and sides."

Customers had come to expect some of the cheapest cuts in Leeds with Danny charging just £1 or £1.50.

His dad Ben was a boxing referee who stepped into the ring with names such as Bruce Woodcock and Freddie Mills. And Danny himself was an army champion.

Danny said in retirement he planned to potter about and trim his lawn and he and his wife of 52 years, Florence, may visit their daughter in America.
