The cafe became a firm favourite with businessmen, solicitors and television personalities who were all lured by the offering of a three course dinner for just £3.

The owner was Musamal Ghauri who was the first to admit his eaterie was somewhat of an eyesore.

He said: "I suppose it could be described as an eyesore but inside it is warm, comfortable and clean and we pay special attention to our food and menu."

Mr Ghauri took over the premises, a run-down transport cafe, in 1978 and continued to serve the traditional British breakfast and lorry drivers' fare for a time, gradually changing the cuisine to Indian.

The cafe had no liquor licence but glasses were provided without charge and guests were invited to bring their own wine.
