These photos turn back the clock to October 28, 1954, when Queen Elizabeth II visited the town accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. The royals spent 65 minutes in Morley during a tour of the West Riding. Thousands lined the route as they drove up Scotchman Lane from Batley, went down Britannia Road and along Bridge Street to the Town Hall, where they stopped for coffee for 20 minutes. They then made their way up Asquith Avenue towards Gildersome and Drighlington and on to Bradford. Some mills closed for an hour or two so workers could see the event. Enjoy these rarely seen photos showcasing the spirit of the occasion. They are published courtesy of the David Atkinson Archive, a collection housed on Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
