More than 22,000 fans turned out to bask in the glory and watch arguably the world's most meaningless friendly just days after the Whites won the Second Division title at Bournemouth in May 1990. Leeds took on Genoa in a game which finished 1-1 with Gordon Strachan being dubbed "the little gentleman" by the Italians who were convinced he diplomatically knocked a first half penalty well wide after one of their players had been sent off. It was a belief emphasised five minutes from time when Genoa were awarded a penalty of their own. Captain Gianluca Signorini insisted on taking the spot kick which he lobbed into the hands of Mervyn Day.
