Mel Sterland became an immediate favourite after signing for Leeds United from Glasgow Rangers in the summer of July 1989. He netted five goals in 42 league games as the Whites sealed promotion back to the First Division after an eight year hiatus. He also played a part in Leeds making an immediate impact on their return to the top flight as they finished fourth. And the best was yet to come as he played a major part in helping the club win the First Division title, contributing six goals in 31 league games.
