Leeds Playhouse - a theatre in the spotlight for 50 years

It's the theatre which has been centre stage for five decades.

The Leeds Playhouse of today was born directly out of the original - a community-based repertory theatre in premises loaned to the Leeds Theatre Trust by the University of Leeds. It opened in September 1970 with Tony Robinson, who later went on to play Baldrick in cult TV series Blackadder, starring as Simon in Alan Plater's play Simon Says. Leeds Playhouse turned into the West Yorkshire Playhouse in March 1990 when it relocated to the Quarry Hill area of the city. In June 2018, it rebranded as Leeds Playhouse once again. These photos turn back the clock to its beginnings and showcase how it took centre stage. READ MORE: 12 memorable Christmas productions at West Yorkshire Playhouse down the years LOVE LEEDS?
